Using a Mind Map for formative assessment!

This example is designed to use Mind Mapping software as a way of testing a learners higher level understanding of a topic, as well as reinforcing their learning, or using it as a revision tool.!!

Having taught a topic, create a 'concept map' of the issues within the topic, showing what the key features are and how they relate to each other. Save the map, and then copy it and save to a different name. Having done this, rearrange the map so that all of the items are level 1, around the core (i.e. there is no structure to the map).

Give this to the learners and ask them to rearrange the map into something with meaning. A learner with a higher order understanding of the topic will find this easier than a learner with limited (or only lower order understanding) of the topic.

Obviously the learner may not get the exact same map as the tutor, and they may want to add or amend some of the branches. This is all part of the process. This exercise would also benefit from collaboration with peers.
