There is a very large body of software supporting mindmapping

and other forms of information mapping.

A non-commercial site that lists just about all software of this type is at Mind-mapping.org

Many of the software packages are free or at least have a free version, though it may be limited in some way.  Be sure to check the many browser-based mindmapping software services that have been introduced during 2007.  These nearly all have a free option that allows you to have several maps, and collaborate with others in building a map.  There are at least twelve of these.

Mind-mapping.org allows you to select your operating system and type of software if you want to narrow down the list.  (If you don't you will see around 200 items.)  To see the browser-based ones, click on the "Refine software list" tab, select "web based" from the Operating systems column and click on the "show selected items" button.

Once you have a list of the type of software you're looking for, you can browse screenshots and explore the links to the software.  The list includes price, and that helps a lot when selecting software.
