Mind Maps as an assessment tool!

In America they are looking at using Mind Mapping as a technique for assessment. At first this may sound daft, but when you think about it, it is a really good idea. In the actual assessment they may use pen and paper (e.g. if in an exam) but they could use Mind Mapping Software beforehand as preparation, or they could use the software if for an assignment.

The advantages that this would bring are:-

  • To create a 'good mind map' requires a good understanding of the issues, so is a way of testing higher order thinking skills
  • This technique may favour visual and kineasthetic learners, who are otherwise disadvantaged by traditional assessment techniques (which usually favour auditory learners).
  • It takes the emphasis away from language and onto the uderstanding of the topic, this will favour people who have difficulty with language.
