3D mindmaps are most valuable when you have built a very large 2D mindmap and find that it is no longer practical to go on using it in its present form.

3D Topicscape can accept MindManager (.mmap) and FreeMind (.mm) file directly and make 3D maps from them. It can also accept exported Personal Brain files (.pba).

In addition, most mindmapping software has the ability to export to Word or a text file. Such files, provided they follow simple rules, can be imported into 3D Topicscape and rendered in 3D for more work in an environment where the practical limitations of the 2D sheet no longer apply.

The first requirement is that the file must be a text one, so for 2D mindmap software that outputs to Word, you will need to open it in Word and save it as txt.

Details of the format of the text file can be found here: 3D Topicscape text import

If a Mind Manager mindmap has files attached to some of its nodes, 3D Topicscape can correctly interpret the information exported by Mind Manager and you will find the files in the appropriate Topic Centers.

Mind Manager nodes can be connected by blue lines (well, they're usually blue) to indicate a connection without a formal hierarchical relationship. When it imports a text file that originated in Mind Manager, 3D Topicscape will interpret these as loose associations.

The free Student Edition is more limited. It can import FreeMind and text files and it can export FreeMind, text and HTML files so that users can build a 3D mindmap during the study and research phase, then export it for the preparation of an essay, term report or the like.
